Cocoa powder (the brown stuff that makes a chocolate bar look and taste like chocolate) is actually VERY good for you!
It has a TON of antioxidants and other good benefits like:
Immune Support: Weight for weight cocoa powder has the same amount of antioxidants as red wine.
These support overall immunity and internal immunity by strengthening your intestinal lining against invading microorganisms. Also known as, The Bad Guys.
Digestion: Studies show substances in dark chocolate help to ease gastrointestinal upsets.
Eases Coughs: One of the stimulants found in cocoa powder, theobromine, is known to soothe sore throats.
Chocolate CAN be very healthy. HOWEVER, where you source your chocolate is the bread and butter to all of the health benefits.
To get the most out of your chocolate follow these rules:
– Choose Organic. At least 30 pesticides are used in conventional cocoa!
– Go Dark. For the MOST antioxidants, choose semisweet or unsweetened chocolate with at least 70% cocoa solids and less sugar!
– Quality is Key. Eating small amounts of high-quality chocolate will be far more satisfying than a highly processed bar. Avoid bars with hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils and other preservatives (example: Cadbury Cream Eggs, Butterfingers, etc).
