SUNNA: Wearing kohl

salam

Did you know that wearing kohl is a sunna? Here I am referring to “ithmid/antimony” kohl not the one sold in almost every shop which are full of chemical components, so be careful !!!!

kohl

Prophet Muhammad (Salallahu ‘alayhi wa salam) used to wear it before sleeping. He would apply it three times in each eyes. Ithmid kohl is said to “brighten the eyesight and to strengthen the growth of the lashes”. Obviously kohl is both for men and women but men should not wear it the way women do.

Below are a hadith and an extract from IbnAl-Qayyim relating the use of kohl according to Prophet Muhammad (Salallahu ‘alayhi wa salam).

Ibn ‘Abbaas Radiyallahu ‘Anhu says:

“Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam said: ‘Use kuhl made of ithmid on the eye; it brightens the eyesight, and strengthens and increases the growth of the eye lashes’. (Sayyidina Ibn’Abbaas Radiyallahu’Anhu also used to say) ‘Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallarn had a small container for keeping kuhl, from which he applied kuhl in each eye three times every night”

(At-Tirmidhi)

Kohl protects the health of the eyes and gives strength and clarity of vision, and it cleanses the eyes of bad substances. Some types of kohl are applied for beautification and its application at the time of sleeping has more benefits, as it will cause stillness from harmful movements.
